Free Life Magazine

Begun by the great Victorian liberal and radical Auberon Herbert, Free Life first appeared in the 1890s. It went into a somewhat extended hiatus during the 20th century, but began again in 1980 as the quarterly journal of the Libertarian Alliance - which, being a successor organisation of the Liberty and Property Defence League, had as good a title to the journal as anyone else.

Following a much briefer hiatus in the late 1980s, it began again in November 1991, with me as the Editor. I was thrilled to have my own soapbox, and I really did intend to bring an issue out every quarter. Then, however, I went out to Slovakia, to advise the Government there on economic and plitical reform. Then, I got married. Then, I found that I had to work very hard to earn a living. So much for all my good intentions!

It has, however, appeared in a rather halting manner ever since. Though never as regular as I might have wished, it has sometimes managed as many as four appearances a year - though this only happened after I had unwisely promised to make it a monthly journal. I blush with shame when I contemplate other journals like The Individual, The Salisbury Review, and Right Now!, the Editors of which have often laboured under similar difficulties, but who have, even so, contrived to deliver with far greater regularity. All I can say is that I have now been the Editor for longer than anyone else in the past century, and have produced more issues. I suppose that is something.

Here is a comlete archive of the journal as it has appeared since I became Editor. One day, I will set to and convert and upload all the issues brought out by the Libertarian Alliance. But do not hold your breath in anticipation.

If you want to comment on any of the articles here, do feel free to write to me. But be warned that I am a poor correspondent. You may need to wait months for an answer, and that is if you ever get one!
